When you begin working with a therapist at Castle Counseling, the treatment approach is as different and unique as each individual. We approach together what modalities work best for your specific goals and the challenges you are hoping to address. Each approach is unique and custom designed to help embody the whole of you. Quite often it is a multi-modal approach that you develop and discover individually with your therapist. Below are some of the types of therapies we provide.

"The Single Most Important Issue For Traumatized People Is To Find A Sense Of Safety In Their Own Bodies"

 Bessel Van Der Kolk

When you seek out therapy, "techniques, theories, modalities..." it can all get understandably confusing.  An important thing to remember is that research has shown that above theory and model, treatment outcomes are very strongly determined by the connection developed between two individuals (you and your therapist).

One piece of the process that Kristy focuses her work on is "somatic healing". It has a lot of buzz around it lately but may feel confusing. The simplest way to understand somatic work is you are beginning to learn the integration (connection) of body (soma) and mind. It incorporates helping our body and nervous system move from a disembodied or dysregulated state to a embodied/co-regulated state. For example some experience  feeling "disconnected" from experiences, feeling "out of touch" with their physical body when having emotional responses or feeling symptoms such as  "floaty" or  "out of body". It can also include feeling painful physical sensations during emotional experiences.

Somatic work aims to GENTLY help you learn to listen to what your body is saying (often without too many words) and learn non-judgmental/gentle and safe ways to help emotion move through and out of the body in a healthy and trauma-honoring manner. This may create a more embodied feeling. It can help encourage our nervous system to move to a co-regulated state. (What is embodied/co-regulated?)  It is the feeling of being more connected to your body in a safe way even during intense emotions and embraces the idea that our nervous system has innate ways to soothe itself and come to a place of peace through intentional and gentle guidance. In the past many trauma therapies required you to sometimes re-experience trauma by talking through it in great and often pain-staking depth. Now, through a greater understanding of neuroscience and  trauma processing, we have learned more effective and safer methods of helping  express and release stored emotion that may live in our body and nervous system.

Through the use of gentle breath work, mindful movement and simply learning to be curious about what comes up within our body as we notice strong emotion...clients are often able to find relief, peace and healing without the idea of having to retell stories over and over again that may be overwhelming to the nervous system.

Kristy invites you to both understand and help calm your nervous system in a way that honors your strengths, enhances understanding of your unique biology and often leads to meaningful emotional shifts and changes. Often you will see changes that soothe, calm and reassure the overactive part of you that is longing to finally exhale.
